Portugal * Political prisoners * 1936/43 – Everything for the Nation + Caravel. Declared value of 400$00, weighing 16.5g, circulated registered from Lisbon (25.09.43) to Tarrafal, transiting via Praia (09.10.43) with stamps of 1$00, red, MF572 and 2$00, violet-brown, MF626, to pay the simple postage of the ordinary mail ($50) of a letter to Cape Verde, weighing up to 20g + registration premium ($50) and the first postage of the declared value (2$00) for the 1st installment up to 1,000$00. Parai registration stamp struck in violet. Dr. Júlio de Macedo was arrested by the PVDE on March 2, 1942, sent to Aljube Prison and, from there, transferred to Caxias Prison on June 18, 1942. Transferred to Tarrafal Concentration Camp, he embarked for Cape Verde on June 20, 1942. On January 27, 1944, he returned to Lisbon, to be admitted to the Júlio de Matos Hospital (Lisbon). From the hospital he was transferred successively: to Caxias Prison (February 2, 1944), Aljube Prison (March 15, 1944), Peniche Prison (April 27, 1944); and, finally, he was conditionally released on May 29, 1944.
