Lot 1756:
Portugal * 1867/70 – D. Luís I. Curved ribbon, perforated. MF32, 80 réis, orange-red, plain paper, perforated 12 ¾. Two copies in a letter dated from Lisbon (29.08.70) to Philadelphia with transit via London (03.09.70) to pay the single postage of a letter to the USA weighing up to 7 ½ g, in accordance with the postage table in force from 25.04.70. The letter was forwarded to London via Spain and France in a closed bag. In London the mail bag was opened and the letter received a circular stamp dated from the London postal administration indicating that the letter had been paid for. It was then forwarded to Southampton bound for the USA. Handwritten in black, the accounting value of 6½ pence (130 réis) to be paid by the Portuguese postal administration to the United Kingdom. “2 CEN” mark, applied in London, in red, relating to the territorial tax to be credited to the USA by the British postal administration. Relating to the 160 réis postage, the postage is broken down into the following installments: First postage of a letter up to 7.5g sent via Spain and France, 4½d (90 réis) + transatlantic tax, 1d (20 réis) + American territorial transit tax, 1d (20 réis) + United Kingdom territorial transit tax not charged twice and already included in the 4½ (90 réis). Total = 6½d (90 + 20 + 20 = 130 réis). MB and MR.
