NYASSA Company. Vertical pair of D. Carlos 100 reis (giraffes) stamp with PROVISIONAL overprint and surcharge 50 reis, with the surcharge omitted on the upper stamp. This stamp is located on the 1st row of the sheet (each sheet 10×5 stamps), in positions 1 to 5. New pair, original gum, with a slight hinge mark on the upper stamp, MF #51 and 51a. Of this stamp with omitted surcharge, only five copies can exist; as a pair, together with the normal stamp, it constitutes one of the greatest rarities, perhaps the greatest, of Portuguese colonial philately (Ref. West-End Philatelist vol VII, June 1910. ) A new pair, in the upper right corner of the sheet, was acquired in 1910 by Ferrari de la Renotiére. VG and VR.
